Material Murmurings | 2016Material Murmurings was an ecological exhibition held at the Spectrum Project Space in Mount Lawley, curated and coordinated by Dr Nien Schwarz. With the interest on minimizing human consumption by revisiting discarded materials, Murmurings was a collection of 25 artists' relationships with a specific waste product.
Within this project, titled before/ after, I wished to challenging notions of purpose and value by discovering unexpected aesthetic qualities in paint discards from before and after my usual process of painting. I assembled oil paint which had hardened before its intended usage, dredged up my leftover sludge from washing brushes, and scooped up my scrapings from canvas pictures. Without a new purpose these materials used would otherwise be destined for landfill. |
