I'm excited to invite you to my second solo exhibition of the year – SONS OF PAN
The Victoria Park Centre for the Arts has supported me with an exhibition space at the Pop-Up Art Gallery, within the shopping centre. For ten days I’ll be displaying thirty-five artworks, from loaded sketchbooks to large paintings and drawings. Also I’ll be treating the space as a temporary studio, offering additional glimpses into my working process.
This exhibition draws upon ancient Western mythology and Freudian psychoanalysis – with a touch of Franz Kafka – to situate the great god Pan in a modern world. I hope to take the half-man half-goat hybrid to a new level, utilizing both humour and body-horror in a series of mixed media pieces – part drawing, part painting.
For SONS OF PAN, I’ve selected an age-old transformation-motif to express certain subsets of puberty. For the developing male teenager, “boyish feelings” of shame and inferiority conflict with a growing persistence and lust; characteristics synonymous with libidinous Pan. In my mind Pan and his kith, the rambunctious satyrs and fauns, are the perfect subject to explore artistically the stages between boy and man. |
