Not only that - a bigger studio space means bigger paintings! My biggest since 2016.
WORTHLESS REFUSE II describes both the worship and fear of the opposite sex. To better situate these feelings in paint, Rudd has researched the historical wealth of erotic art, from the graffiti of Pompeii, to the Shunga of Edo Japan, to the underground Comix scene of 1960s America; and pits it against its antithesis in Medieval art, with its fantastical illustrations of religious Judgement against self-indulgence.
If you're a VIP or Patron of my practice, I'm discussing early opportunities - online and in-person - to access the show's contents for yourself. As patrons, you've earnt the first choice of purchase. Expect an email within the next two weeks!
The opening night will be April 18 at 6-til-8pm - the night before Good Friday. If you're going away for the holidays, please join us before your trip! An official opening talk will be given by artist and mentor Gregory Pryor.
If you've attended my celebrations in the past, you'll be expecting thematic treats - we'll have it sorted! You'll be leaving high on sugar and drink.
Another treat to excite you should be my neighbouring exhibitor Harrison See. See's solo exhibition HOLLOW FLIGHT announces his return from China and an embark on a PhD. HOLLOW FLIGHT will occupy the front half of the generous project space and runs concurrently with my own exhibition, concluding May 2.
The discomforting nature of Rudd’s art, which occasionally confronts or simply re-enacts real-world taboos, categorizes his practice within the Zapffean space of “sublimation”, wherein creative individuals mediate specific existential fears and instincts as alternatives to potentially destructive outlets. Sublimation concerns itself directly with existentially difficult issues from a safe distance, “As works in which the worst fortunes of humanity are presented in a stylized and removed manner as entertainment”.
