After exhibiting in Europe during the first covid scare, Perth artist Ryck Rudd began painting a series of local townscapes inspired by the eerily-quiet yet rapidly-changing world of 2020.

"Perth seemed to freeze in time during the first lockdown. After two weeks in quarantine, I walked outside to buy my own groceries... and you would think everyone had all perished overnight. The whole town felt abandoned. The parks, the schools, and every local business: empty, ghostly and silent. Just the wind and the trees and the birds. It was uncanny but it was very tranquil. It felt like the new world -- whatever it would be -- was approaching.

"These oil paintings are a meditation on my experiences in the suburbs of Perth during the first big covid scare."

**CANCELLED** SAVE THE DATE! October 8 at INTOO - Solo Exhibition

15/9/2021

UPDATE:

Those following InToo's page will know this (and I thank you for the kind messages) but InToo has been forced to close unexpectedly. Hence, my upcoming show is cancelled. I'm sorry to have gotten your hopes up... especially if you rearranged your schedules to attend the opening night.

I always try to have two solo exhibitions a year. This year both shows have failed to happen. The work is still here in storage but I'm uncertain where to show it. InToo was the perfect place and the perfect crowd for the Mickey/Simpsons and the Townscapes/Trash paintings.

Thanks for the kind messages last night. I'm not against trying again this year. So I'm all ears for suggestions!

Opening on October 8  in Northbridge, INTOO STUDIOS will be hosting my solo exhibition FANTASTIC VISIONS (AND TRASH), featuring landscape paintings inspired by Perth's first lockdown.

This open invitation extends to families. FANTASTIC VISIONS might be the first of my shows to not contain NSFW content. Read about it below!
Click here to read and join the facebook event for FANTASTIC VISIONS (AND TRASH)
Supporters please note: Recurrent lockdowns has made advertising and event-planning much harder for small businesses. I'd very much appreciate your efforts to share this event invitation with like-minded people. Thank you!

LEAVERS' BOOK solo exhibition at EMANUEL VON BAEYER LONDON

25/3/2021

Emanuel von Baeyer Cabinet is delighted to launch a new online exhibition displaying forty portraits created by Ryck Rudd (b.1991 Perth, Australia). The artist explores the nature of 'identities and stereotypes'.
Picture
"When I make paintings, I typically decide on allegories and traditional archetypes with plenty of exaggeration: Oedipus, the femme-fatale, Icarus, Narcissus, et cetera. Then one day I thought, 'look at these kids, they must be a total nightmare at school'. From that, I got the impulse to deepen my favourite archetypes.

With these forty portraits I ask, who plays into those stereotypes? Those boys and girls in my paintings, who are they? They're all my children, but I hadn't asked who they are until now. I decided to poke fun at the high school yearbook by showing who these kids really would be -- not who their parents or teachers would want them to be.

High school is a melting pot of identities and stereotypes; the perfect Petri-dish to study someone's personal character. At school, our self-awareness grows painfully clear during puberty and we feel terribly anxious and exciteable, isolated even while surrounded by others like us. Each of us copes in different ways to get through it.

The thick impasto, vivid colour, and broad brush strokes together give texture and movement to the pimple-faced fidgety teenagers of my imaginary world.

While these portraits grew more defined, it felt natural for me to group them into cliques to further develop their personalities. When installed together, each portrait reacts agains the next and I can feel a narrative unfolding. It adds another layer of character; much more exciting than the stale, rudimentary yearbook arrangement."

   (Ryck Rudd, February 2021)

The works are divided between 5 walls (A-E), each containing 8 portraits as part of installation by the artist.
While the UK remains under lockdown, my latest exhibition will be viewable online with higher resolution imagery on the EvB website. I invite you to pour over the textures and brushmarks like I do with my favourite painters Soutine and Ensor, who inspired the painting style for this series.

Creating traditional art in Western Australia is a rather odd business. Lockdowns here have been very brief and we mostly keep on with the daily rituals of going to work or buying stuff. Still, artists remain aware that if restrictions return mid-exhibition, their time and resources would fall to waste. I don't blame anyone who avoids the risk; I'm only very lucky to be with a gallery that manages both digital and physical space. For years, EvB has been providing online access to exhibitions.

With economic uncertainty I presumed people would cease collecting and investing in art. But all throughout the pandemic my experiences have been surprisingly fortunate. I've sent paintings to locked-down cities, interstate and overseas. I was quite confused at this, but it does make sense that, while people are spending more time at home, they wish to spend it with art.

For any enquiries on the paintings in LEAVERS' BOOK, please contact me directly or gallery Emanuel von Baeyer.

Please note: while the majority of my paintings are displayed on the walls, a few are also visible upon request! Please ask and a gallery attendant will prepare the hidden paintings for viewing.
To quote my statement from the exhibition catalog: ''What if we each kept our waste, instead of making it someone else's problem?

''This year, in my own life I began dumpster diving, composting, and vegetable gardening. Rescuing food from a rotten fate and making it a meal for myself or my garden is a very enriching experience.

''My paintings here are inspired by the giant mountains of trash growing all over the world. The sheer scale of garbage mountains can reach sublime proportions making the individual feel powerless to influence change. These mountains of trash might outlast the great pyramids.

''I want to ask, might our legacy be total rubbish?''

DUMPED is curated by Tami Esancy. Fellow artists included are Beverley Iles, Neil Elliot, Veronica McGrath, Vince Austin, Tami Estancy herself, Peter Dailey, and Carolyn Francis. The fold-out catalog includes a beautiful introduction by Gemma Ben-Ary, Executive Director of Ellenbrook Arts HQ.

Please join us for the ARTIST PANEL TALK - Sunday November 15 at 1pm. Earlier this year for FRINGE FESTIVAL I joined other exhibiting artists at the gallery for the Lust for Lustre panel discussion. It was immense fun with the crowd and felt like we were on television! Please join us for the discourse, especially if you're concerned with the topics at hand, of waste, innovation, creativity and resourcefulness in our culture.

Dickfoot and The Farm go to Holland! TEFAF 2020 MAASTRICHT

3/3/2020

Picture
From January through to February I was given the privelege of exhibiting alongside some of Perth's best artists like Andrew Nicholls, Olga Cironis, Eva Fernandez, and Carla Adams. As part of the Fringe World Festival, the exhibition LUST FOR LUSTRE featured 23 artists including myself, curated by artist Gemma Ben-Ary and Rizzy at Ellenbrook Arts Centre. LUST FOR LUSTRE focused on our cultural and individual relationships to pearls, from myth to scientific to personal significance, in any way the artist wished. The show concluded with a Fringe Award for Visual Arts and Design.

I've somehow misplaced my hi-res photographs. I'll post them another time. So we'll have to make do with some bad phone pictures of small details of my painting ''The Farming''. Click to enlarge each photo.

I painted something perhaps unexpected, of cows birthing pearls in a factory farm, surrounding miserable factory workers. It became a diptych after I decided one panel couldn't convey the painting's atmosphere, and I wanted to add a third panel and maybe a fourth. But under the time constraints, learning to paint cows and then finish a painting of this type was tough.

I'm glad this isn't the end for The Farming; today it was sent to the Netherlands for a group exhibition with some of my heroes, living and dead. The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) is Maastricht's biggest art event, and galleries from all over the world exhibit both in and around the heart of the city. My gallery Emanuel von Baeyer London is exhibiting in the main building and is hosting a group exhibition nearby at ANDRIESKAPEL, a repurposed chapel-turned-art-space.

If anyone remembers my 2016 graduate painting ''Achilles'', accurately dubbed ''Dickfoot'' by the community, it might be a surprise that this beast (2.5 meters by 2 meters) is now hung on the chapel walls! See below for some snapshots from 2016 and from four years later, preparing for TEFAF 2020.

Very exciting! I'm saving the final pictures of installation for my next blog entry. In one week I'll be in Maastricht to view ANDRIESKAPEL and photograph young Dickfoot and The Farming, under the chapel roof, alongside artworks by my heroes Karel Appel, Marwan, and Martin Assig. It'll be my first time outside of Australia, so I'm bracing for a visual overload of beauty and culture. Follow my instagram to see live updates of my travels!

These two exhibitions have been the biggest jump in my career. I am very grateful for the opportunities given me by Gemma Ben-Ary and Emanuel von Baeyer, and for Sophie La Maitre who pushes me towards greater things.

Until the 24th of October I will be Eel Meal's artist-in-residence with an open studio practice. All are welcome to visit during the gallery's open hours (see below), and the project concludes with a short exhibiton. Join us!

I'll have limited-edition prints of paintings and original drawings available for purchase all the while.

For one month artist Ryck Rudd will utilize impoverished materials and their disposability to create a clumsy world of cardboard sculptures and drawings on paper.

For his own unflattering creation myth Rudd will tell an adult-themed fantastical story of sex and distress.

Songs of Pan features the artist's first exploration into sculpture and installation. All are welcome to visit throughout.

This month-long open-studio project will culminate in a closing night exhibition with tasty morsels and drinks.

Rudd is represented by Emanuel von Baeyer London.
Manager and artist Nick Fitzpatrick and myself are organizing a downloadable artist talk about the project. The acoustics are great from all the cardboard, so we expect a pleasant listening experience. Stay posted.

Below are some photos of progression for the installation. Be sure to follow my instagram and facebook and those of Eel Meal to watch the space progress!

SOLO EXHIBITION - PERTH - APRIL/MAY

2/4/2019

Hello everyone! If you've been following me on social media, you've seen me painting up a storm in preparation for my next solo exhibition in Perth!
Picture
In two weeks Spectrum Project Space will be transformed into a capricious gallery of entirely new paintings and sketchbooks. My largest collection yet!

Not only that - a bigger studio space means bigger paintings! My biggest since 2016.
WORTHLESS REFUSE II describes both the worship and fear of the opposite sex. To better situate these feelings in paint, Rudd has researched the historical wealth of erotic art, from the graffiti of Pompeii, to the Shunga of Edo Japan, to the underground Comix scene of 1960s America; and pits it against its antithesis in Medieval art, with its fantastical illustrations of religious Judgement against self-indulgence.
Emanuel von Baeyer, my gallery in London, will be designing an e-catalog and online floor-sheet for the show. Throughout the exhibition the gallery and I will be facilitating sales and collection of artworks. If you wish to join the mailing list, please provide your details here.

If you're a VIP or Patron of my practice, I'm discussing early opportunities - online and in-person - to access the show's contents for yourself. As patrons, you've earnt the first choice of purchase. Expect an email within the next two weeks!

The opening night will be April 18 at 6-til-8pm - the night before Good Friday. If you're going away for the holidays, please join us before your trip! An official opening talk will be given by artist and mentor Gregory Pryor.

If you've attended my celebrations in the past, you'll be expecting thematic treats - we'll have it sorted! You'll be leaving high on sugar and drink.

Another treat to excite you should be my neighbouring exhibitor Harrison See. See's solo exhibition HOLLOW FLIGHT announces his return from China and an embark on a PhD. HOLLOW FLIGHT will occupy the front half of the generous project space and runs concurrently with my own exhibition, concluding May 2.
The discomforting nature of Rudd’s art, which occasionally confronts or simply re-enacts real-world taboos, categorizes his practice within the Zapffean space of “sublimation”, wherein creative individuals mediate specific existential fears and instincts as alternatives to potentially destructive outlets. Sublimation concerns itself directly with existentially difficult issues from a safe distance, “As works in which the worst fortunes of humanity are presented in a stylized and removed manner as entertainment”.

TWO SOLO EXHIBITIONS - LONDON - JULY/AUGUST

3/8/2018

London gallery and dealer Emanuel von Baeyer has scooped me up for a solo exhibition in the UK. Named after 'The Mess', a painting censored from my first solo show in Joondalup 2017, THE MESS will contain 30 artworks, from paintings to sketchbooks, from my series CAPRICCIO!, WORTHLESS REFUSE, and SONS OF PAN.
Picture
Censored in my hometown of Perth, 'The Mess' is now for sale in London through Emanuel von Baeyer gallery.

Emanuel von Baeyer has also collaborated with Vardaxoglou, an emerging and prolific gallery, to curate a solo exhibition based on the 15 paintings and sketchbooks I've sent to London. This second exhibition, also titled THE MESS, will take place in Chelsea from 3 - 10 July.

After the Chelsea exhibition, Emanuel von Baeyer will continue the larger 30-piece exhibition online and at the EVBaeyer gallery collection in London, concluding on the 31st of August.
Ryck Rudd - The Mess is a collaborative exhibition between Emanuel von Baeyer and Vardaxoglou, presenting recent paintings and works on paper by Australian artist Ryck Rudd (b. 1991 in Perth, Australia).

This exhibition of Ryck Rudd's works is part of Emanuel von Baeyer's ongoing interest in young artists whose work is ready to be unveiled. Emanuel von Baeyer and Vardaxoglou were drawn to Rudd because he is a truly classical artist - studied and consistent with an excellent sense of colour and evocative style and subject-matter. Indirect influence in the colour schemes of the late 19th century Les Nabis artists like Vuillard, Bonnard and Denis is evident, but he has singular imagery which places firmly in the present.

Included in our exhibition are paintings and drawings from three of his recent series; Capriccio!, Sons of Pan and Worthless Refuse.
Above: Installation of the Emanuel von Baeyer / Vardaxoglou exhibition, reactivating an old heritage bank space in Chelsea.
Information on Emanuel von Baeyer:
Emanuel von Baeyer London was founded in 1998 and has since been firmly established as a leading representative of the younger generation of old master dealers. Emanuel von Baeyer deals principally in fine European drawings, prints and paintings from the fifteenth through the twentieth century. They also handle select postwar and contemporary art, showing interest in both established and emerging artists. His clientele includes older and younger generations of private collectors, art historians and museum curators from institutions around the world. He is now widely recognised as an innovative dealer within his field and has published numerous specialist sales catalogues.

Emanuel von Baeyer regularly participates in the London Original Print Fair, Frieze Masters London, Master Drawings Week in London and New York, IFPDA Print Fair New York, Antiquarian Booksellers Associations (ABA), TEFAF, Maastricht and Stuttgarter Antiquariatsmesse. He is also a member of the International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA) and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB). He has held exhibitions in various galleries in Munich, Berlin and New York.
It may occur to readers that I've posted this message far too late for the first exhibition in Chelsea: if you were in London last month, you have my apologies!

As you can imagine, this is an overwhelming experience and a dream for any artist. I'm extremely privileged to be treated by two esteemed British galleries who believe in my practice. But that's not all: expect more news here regarding Emanuel von Baeyer and myself in the coming weeks! This is one giant step for my career, and I want to share it with you.

Moment of Conception was also the poster baby we used for my Capriccio! solo exhibition in 2017. Its inclusion in this year's JCAA booklet should strike a chord with residents who might recall the exhibition advertisements I posted up around town last year.
