New Work Added - Material Murmurings

18/11/2017

I've added another body of work to my gallery - Material Murmurings - undertaken during my final year at university in 2016. The project focuses on an artist's level of wastage, utilizing oil paint waste specifically. In my experience, paint is too compelling (and expensive) to be throw away... even if it's hardened or reduced to sludge.

I started the project during my university degree, in a new unit titled Spatial Studio. To explain brefly: Edith Cowan University's recently added unit is one of the very remarkable units designed by Dr. Nien Schwartz. The lesson plan is sharp, the exercises amusing, and the theory enticing. One part of the unit, Material Murmurings, is a semester-long project focused on waste and consumption. The final grading is of a group exhibition open to the public on campus, at the Spectrum Project Space.

I hesitate to describe Material Murmurings as turning trash into treasure - but rather as imbuing strength and purpose into forgotten materials. There are objects made which do in fact reach the levels expected of compelling art. It's a surprising and meaningful exhibition. These days we see Australian university arts courses contracting, but hopefully Material Murmurings continues and gains wider recognition. Maybe towards acquisitions and commissions from mass-production (and mass-waste) companies, and invitations to art events like Sculpture by the Sea.

You can read about this year's show in particular here.
And see my work from last year in my gallery.
